Amazon Web Services Always Free

The Amazon Web Service (AWS) Always Free Tier is automatically activated on each new AWS account. With the AWS Free Tier, you can try out some AWS services free of charge within certain usage limits.

Amazon Web Services Always Free Tier

The AWS Free Tier includes three different types of offerings:

  • Trials: These are short-term trial offers that start from the date that you activate a service. You pay standard rates after the trial period expires. For more information on how different services are charged, see AWS Pricing.
  • 12-Months free: These offers provide limited usage for 12 months after your initial sign-up date. You pay standard rates after your 12 months free usage term expires or if your application use exceeds the free tier limits.
  • Always free: These offers are available to all AWS customers and don’t expire at the end of your 12-month AWS Free Tier term.

However, not all AWS services are free. You can track your Free Tier usage with the AWS Free Tier usage alerts. AWS provides free tier usage alerts using AWS Budgets. These alerts notify you when your free tier usage exceeds 85 percent of your monthly limit

Using Amazon Web Services Always Free

You can try some AWS services free of charge within certain usage limits. AWS calls this the AWS Free Tier. The AWS Free Tier is designed to give you hands-on experience with a range of AWS services at no charge. For example, you can explore AWS as a platform for your business by setting up a test website with a server, alarms, and database. You can also try out services for developers, such as AWS CodePipeline, AWS Data Pipeline, and AWS Device Farm.

When you create an AWS account, you’re automatically signed up for the AWS Free Tier for 12 months. Your AWS Free Tier eligibility expires at the end of the 12-month period. When your Free Tier expires, AWS starts charging the regular rates for any AWS services and resources that you’re using.

To avoid charges while on the AWS Free Tier, you must keep your usage below the AWS Free Tier limits. You are charged for any usage that exceeds the limits. To help you stay within the limits, you can track your AWS Free Tier usage and set a billing alarm to notify you if you start incurring charges. For more information, see AWS Free Tier limits and Tracking your AWS Free Tier usage. For tips about avoiding unexpected charges, see Avoiding unexpected charges. Contact AWS Support if you require additional explanation of unexpected charges on your bill.

If you don’t use the full benefits provided by the AWS Free Tier in a given month, the benefits don’t roll over to the next month. To maximize your AWS Free Tier benefits, be sure to spend time with AWS each month, trying out the services that you’re curious about.
